This Side of 18 Months

Hey everybody.

Well, this is it for me! I'm about to take the plunge. I get set apart tomorrow morning, then spend most of my day traveling to SLC. I report to the MTC on Wednesday!

I want to thank all of you for being there for me during this part of my mission journey, and hope that we can all keep growing together as I start the next step: missionary work. It's been a real honor to meet so many of you through the genesis and short life (so far) of this missionary blog. All of you are wonderful, incredible people!

From now on, a friend of mine will be posting my weekly emails on this website. If you want to contact me, you can find all of my contact information on the sidebar! >>

Thanks again for reading this blog and taking part in my missionary preparation. I'll see you on the other side of the next eighteen months!

-Sister Dain Broadbent

Guest Post, RM Style

So do you remember that one time I told you the story about how I went out tracting with the sisters in my ward the day after Christmas?

Remember how I mentioned a certain Sister Maybin, who returned home from her mission in January?

Yeah, well, I managed to convince Sister Maybin to write a guest post for you, just so you can see how awesome she is firsthand. Although she's not technically Sister Maybin anymore, having completed her one year and six months of labor, she's a forever sister now, and I will always look up to her as a missionary and as a disciple of Christ and an example of a righteous woman.

So, if you've been wanting some advice from an RM (which I want basically 24/7) I've got you covered.

Finally

It's done.

As of Thursday night, my papers have been submitted to Salt Lake City and are awaiting assignment as I write this.

It seems so unreal.

In a few short days, I will have a destination for the next eighteen months of my life. I will know the place that will become my home, where I will expend all of my energy and all of my love serving the people.

In all honesty, this isn't the important part. Where you go should have little effect on how you go. The people in Tampa, Florida need the gospel and the Lord's love just as much as the people in Hong Kong or Frankfurt, Germany.

When I think about it, it's hard not to judge myself by the "coolness" of my mission, wherever that ends up being. Am I less of a missionary for being called to serve in Boise, Idaho? Is there something uncool about my personality that would keep me from being a good fit in Paris or Rio de Janeiro? Am I less intelligent because I was called to preach the gospel in my native tongue?

I wish I could say it a million time over.

No. No no no no no no no.

The District

Wow, I'm surprised that I haven't talked about this yet! The District is a web series made by the church that gives a personal account of the lives of missionaries. If you haven't seen it yet, you have to.

The second season was filmed more recently than the first, and it focuses more on Preach My Gospel style of teaching, so if you haven't watched any of it yet, I'd watch the second season first. I'm very much biased; I love the segments about the sisters, and I feel the Spirit so often while watching them teach and watching their activities throughout the day. There's no doubt it my mind that the Lord really does work through missionaries to bring salvation to many.

So, go watch an episode or two! Each episode is about 30 minutes long.

One Time I Went Tracting

This past Christmas break was when I decided that it was time to start getting my butt into gear about going on a mission. The sister missionaries for our mission have recently moved into our ward boundaries, so within a dinner appointment or two I already had agreed to go on splits with them (they were in group of three at the time).

What an interesting thing that was.
